history

Covenant Classical Christian School (CCCS) is a ministry of Covenant Presbyterian Church (PCA), Columbia, SC. Over the past few years CCCS has integrated the classical method into our upper grades by adding Latin, Logic and Rhetoric and we continue to introduce classical studies to the elementary level.

In 1982 the Session and congregation of Covenant Presbyterian Church organized an elementary school to provide the children of the church and the community at large a well-balanced learning environment for the educational development of the total child. This organization came as a result of the vision of Pastor Gary Aitken. Pastor Aitken initially served as the Headmaster of the school. The school was established with a governing body of a Board of Directors. Today, as then, the members of the School Board are approved by the Covenant Presbyterian Church Session and the Board answers to the church Session as its authority.

The school was founded to give purpose to education by having students recognize God as being in the center of each subject taught and acquainting them with an understanding about who they are, why they are here, and where they are going. Skills are taught that enable students to glorify God through their work and in His world. Our goal to hire and retain teachers who evidence fruit of a vital Christian faith was and still remains one major priority as we strive to provide an excellent, all-encompassing Christian education.

In 1982, CCCS enrolled fourteen first graders. The goal was to add a grade each year until CCCS was K-12. Enrollment grew rapidly under the leadership of Jim Misner as associate pastor and Headmaster to include over 100 students through grade 5 by 1985. Continued blessing by God was evident as parental interest in the school expanded to include the middle and high school grades.

We have been blessed and excited to see God building His kingdom through laborers who have been faithful in their ministry of Christian education. Plans have been developed, but not yet implemented to seek funding for expansion of school facilities to include more educational space and perhaps a gym. We look forward to God’s next great work, seeking His will as we further develop and implement our vision of a school which seeks to excel in all areas of academics; seeking His wisdom as we integrate classical Christian education from grades K5-12; and resting on His sovereign care for our children, drawing them to Himself through Jesus Christ.
